Community Connections

The Community Connections program is coordinated through the Social Services Office in the Department of Public Health Sciences and provides a number of opportunities for Texas A&M College of Dentistry students to participate in outreach activities.  Students are encouraged to participate in the activities listed below and may also request assistance in planning and implementing projects of their own.  Contact the Social Services Office at 8353.

Tooth Talk

A program of oral health education directed primarily at elementary, middle, and high school students; also teen mom classes, college classes, and employee groups.  Programs are typically presented in public and private schools in the Dallas area, The Museum of Nature and Science at Dallas Fair Park, the College of Dentistry and other business and civic sites.

Dental Community Service

A program of dental health education, dental examinations and treatment, and oral cancer screenings, typically presented at Health Fairs, Public Health Dental Clinics and during school Student Body Screenings.  The intended audience includes people of all ages in the general population as well as student bodies and special population groups.  Locations include civic centers, churches, schools, and corporate sites.

Community Preceptor Program

A selective course conducted by the Department of Public Health Sciences, involving a one or two-week visit by a fourth-year dental student to a dental office or public health dental clinic.  Locations include private dental offices, group dental practice sites, and public health clinics in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Colorado.

There are also a number of other events and sites at which College of Dentistry student volunteers typically participate:

  1. Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair (held annually in August)
  2. Christina’s Smile, PGA Tour
  3. Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
  4. Children’s Free Sealant and Prophy Day at the College of Dentistry
  5. Texas Mission of Mercy (various locations in Texas)
  6. Cornell Corrections Judicial Treatment Center screenings
