Stomatology Center
The Stomatology Center, a subdivision of the Department of Periodontics at Texas A&M College of Dentistry, is devoted to the diagnosis, treatment and research of unusual oral diseases.
Since the center’s establishment in 1984, thousands of patients have visited the center with unusual mouth lesions ranging from canker sores to cancer. Diseases such as lichen planus, mucous membrane pemphigoid and pemphigus vulgaris have been commonly encountered along with dry and burning mouth and allergic reactions to foods, toothpastes and dental restorative materials.
These conditions often are referred to as “orphan diseases” because the patients may go from doctor-to-doctor in search of diagnoses and cures for their “mysterious” oral health problems.
The Stomatology Center also supports the online International Oral Lichen Planus Support Group.
With the center’s unique blend of faculty composed of periodontists, oral and maxillofacial pathologists, a molecular biologist and a dermatologist, it has been possible to diagnose and successfully treat the majority of patients presenting with unusual diseases and disorders.
