Teaching Interests

Teaching responsibilities include Craniofacial Development and Growth, Responsible Conduct of Research, and Research Compliance.

In addition, Dr. Carlson lectures principally to dental and orthodontic programs and professional societies throughout the world on current advances in the developmental biology and growth of the craniofacial complex as this relates to the biological basis for the origin and treatment of dentofacial deformities.

Research Interests

Dr. Carlson has been actively engaged in basic, applied, and clinical research on normal and abnormal development and growth of the craniofacial complex for more than 40 years. His main areas of interest over the years include the following:

• Effect of muscle function on craniofacial growth and treatment
• Growth, function, and treatment of the temporomandibular joint
• Development of concepts, theories, and paradigms related to craniofacial growth and form
• Role of genetic and epigenetic mechanisms in normal craniofacial development and growth, as well as in the outcome of dentofacial treatment
