Biography
Dr. Shivam Mehta is a clinician-scientist working as a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the Texas A&M School of Dentistry. He is a dental graduate from India. He also obtained his master’ degree and certificate in orthodontics form India in 2015. Following his graduation, he worked in private practice for 2 years. In 2018, he completed a 1 year fellowship program on Recent Advances in Orthodontics at University of Illinois, Chicago. Following his fellowship, he was invited to join the University of Connecticut where he received a dual degree/certificate program (Master of Dental Science and Certificate in orthodontics) in 2021. He has been teaching in Orthodontics as a full-time faculty since 2021. He loves to teach and share his diverse clinical experiences in orthodontics with the orthodontic residents - the next generation of orthodontists.
Research Interests
Dr. Mehta’s research interests are artificial Intelligence, rapid palatal expansion, aligners, and orthodontic tooth movement. His current research and AAOF grant focuses on the use of artificial intelligence for orthodontic diagnosis. In addition to his research on artificial intelligence, he has been actively involved in research on conventional and mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE). As most studies in the current literature describe only the short-term results following rapid palatal expansion appliances, his research focuses on fulfilling this unmet need of the long-term appraisal by assessing the samples from a randomized controlled clinical trial to analyze the several aspects of rapid palatal expansion using Cone-beam Computed tomography (CBCT). His previous AAOF research grant focused on the advanced understanding of the biological mechanisms of orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in the Osteogenesis Imperfecta mice model (Col1a2 oim/J) under the influence of Alendronate. With this study, he aimed to answer the fundamental questions which have direct clinical applications for orthodontic treatment of patients with OI. In conjunction with the animal research, he was also conducting another independent study on molecular mechanisms of orthodontic tooth movement. This study was a Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial evaluating the efficacy of photobiomodulation with OrthoPulse™ device for the acceleration of orthodontic tooth movement.
