OMS Externship

What is an OMS externship?

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery externships provide dental students an opportunity to increase their knowledge of the full scope of OMS practice by working alongside OMS faculty and residents in hospital and clinical settings.

What to expect as an OMS extern?

OMS externs spend one week gaining experience in performing dentoalveolar surgery, observing major craniofacial surgery procedures, making rounds and standing Emergency Room call with OMS residents, as well as, attending hospital and departmental meetings. Externs generally acknowledge acquiring considerable knowledge about the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery at both the School and at Baylor University Medical Center.

Who qualifies to become an extern?

Clinically and academically qualified 3rd and 4th-year U.S. Citizen dental students from a U.S. ADA-accredited dental school may qualify for acceptance to our externship program. Further requirements and information may be found on the application or by contacting the program coordinator.

When is the program offered?

We accept applications and externs year-round for two week rotations. Many externs rotate here during the summer months or other breaks when their normal academic responsibilities are lightened or suspended. To maximize student experience and involvement a maximum of two externs are placed at any given time and placement is on a first-come, first-served basis after acceptance into the program.

Does Texas A&M School of Dentistry provide housing or meals?

Housing arrangements and meals are the responsibility of the extern. Baylor University Medical Center has an affordably priced cafeteria located next door to the school and many low-cost, short-term housing options are available nearby.

What do externs have to provide?

Externs provide their own surgical scrub attire (tops and bottoms) for the entire rotation period and a clean, white laboratory-style, doctor's coat. Students should also bring OSHA-approved protective eyewear. The school does not provide laundry facilities.

How do I become an OMS extern at the Texas A&M School of Dentistry?

Be sure that all required documents are either attached or sent to the program coordinator at least 30 days prior to your requested dates. Applications will not be considered until all documents are received.
