OMS Residency Program

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a variety of training programs.

The postgraduate residency division conducts one of the most highly-prized and sought after Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Programs in the country, attracting the brightest, most talented applicants each year. The director of residency training is Dr. Andrew Read-Fuller.

OMS Residency Curriculum

There are two levels of training currently offered.

1) The 6-year MD/Certificate program in conjunction with Texas Tech University School of Medicine

2) The 4-year Certificate-only program is for applicants currently serving in the US Military ONLY

Program Goals and Objectives

• Prepare the resident academically and surgically to complete the certification examinations of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
• Meet the requirements for accreditation in oral and maxillofacial surgery
• Foster an attitude of critical inquiry, intellectual self-renewal, and lifelong learning throughout the resident's professional career
• Stimulate the desire to deliver ethical, compassionate, and effective health care services to the public
• Develop surgical expertise, diagnostic acumen, and patient management skills that will enable the resident to pursue an academic appointment or private practice-based career

Residents participate in treatment planning and direct consultation with other dental and foundational knowledge (basic science) specialists within the dental school while working with the medical staff of Level I trauma center, Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC). While on-call, residents assume responsibilities for the management of maxillofacial emergencies on a 24 hours/day basis through the BUMC Emergency Department. BUMC's location proximate to downtown Dallas results in a substantial caseload of trauma, infection, and pathology case, yielding a full, well-balanced educational experience for all residents in the program. With a base of more than 500 admissions per year, the program embraces a full-spectrum, contemporary oral and maxillofacial surgery practice.

Combined MD/OMS Certificate Program

In the combined 6-year MD degree/oral and maxillofacial surgery certificate program, the resident begins their training at Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Medicine (TTUHSC) in Lubbock, Texas as a full-time medical student with advanced standing in the second-year class. Residents spend the entire duration of the second and third years of medical school at Texas Tech, completing the required classwork and rotations in General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry. During year four of medical school, the resident remains at Texas Tech until approximately the end of July, completing elective rotations in Neurosurgery, Neurology, or repeat rotations in other specialty departments listed above. The resident returns to Dallas in August of the year four of medical school to begin five months of training in Anesthesiology at Parkland Memorial Hospital and five months of oral and maxillofacial surgery training. After completing med school, residents complete a 1-year Internship in General Surgery at the BUMC during which three months are on the OMS service. The final 24 months are comprised of oral and maxillofacial surgery training, augmented with periodic rotations for advanced levels of training and experience.

OMS Certificate Program - Current U.S. Military ONLY

When funding and manpower needs permit, the program selects residents for a 4-year OMS residency program that results in a certificate. This program is only available to applicants that are currently serving in the U.S. Military. These residency positions, when available, are fully accredited and meet all requirements of the ADA, and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Unlike the MD program participants, these residents spend the entire time of training working in the clinics at the college and participating in rotations at affiliated locations. These positions are filled with approved residents from federal agencies (U.S. Military ONLY) and are not available through the open application process. Resident Stipends 

Stipends for residents going through medical school provide a minimal financial subsidy for students while attending Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas. Stipends during the year as a General Surgery intern are determined, in part, by BUMC, and are competitive with similar programs. Stipends as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Resident are competitive with stipends offered at other institutions.

Applicant Requirements

• All applicants must be currently enrolled in an U.S. ADA-accredited dental school, or hold a DDS or DMD degree from an U.S. ADA-accredited dental school and be a current U.S. Citizen. Dentists with degrees from foreign countries and/or Non-U.S. Citizens are currently not eligible for our program.
• All applicants should have a passing score on Part I of the National Board Examination and have taken the Comprehensive Basic Science Examination to be considered eligible for application.
• Due to the highly competitive nature of the OMS residency application process, all applicants should ideally be in the top 15% of their dental school class, have a high GPA, and CBSE score and have recommendation letters that attest to demonstrated interest and potential in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Although others will be reviewed and considered, in all likelihood, their applications will not be competitive. All applicants must be U.S. Citizens and hold a degree from a U.S. Dental School.
• Interviews are by invitation only. If invited, all applicants are expected to interview in person to be considered for a residency appointment. Interviews are all day and usually occur in early December. Substantial notice is given so applicants can secure favorable airfares to and from Dallas airports at the cost of the potential resident. Housing and transportation needs are the responsibility of the applicants. Interviewees should plan on arriving the night prior to the interviews and depart Dallas no earlier than 7 p.m. on the day of the interviews so there will be time to travel to the airport (about 45 minutes) and arrive with sufficient lead time as interviews often run until 5:00 in the afternoon.
